Located in the rolling hills of Hampden, Massachusetts, GreatHorse is a beacon of elegance and opportunity, offering majestic views of the entire Connecticut River Valley below. We love the game of golf but not the attitude encountered at most clubs.
GreatHorse was built around the idea of like-minded members enjoying a lifestyle club without the stuffiness of traditional clubs. This is a place to relax, compete, indulge, train, mingle, celebrate, get away, mix it up and live your best life at one of the best places in Massachusetts.
In the early 1950’s, Guy ‘Sonny’ Antonacci started a sanitation business with a single truck. A venture that evolved into a diversified, multi-generational family business which today includes GreatHorse. Like all of their business interests, GreatHorse was the product of entrepreneurial spirit, vision, hard work and some luck.
GreatHorse is perched on the site previously occupied by Hampden Country Club. HCC first opened in 1973, and over the years it became a tired golf club dying on the vine when the Antonacci family purchased it in 2012.
After seeing the property, GreatHorse President, Guy Antonacci, and his family knew the views were stunning, and with some vision and hard work, the property could be something special. After more than three years — and $45 million — what started off as a “basic renovation” transformed HCC into the most luxurious and exclusive club in the region. GreatHorse — a name chosen in a nod to one of the family’s many entrepreneurial pursuits — made its debut in 2015.
From the very beginning, members and their guests quickly recognized and appreciated the difference between GreatHorse and traditional clubs.
The championship golf course was redesigned by Brian Silva and is now easily among the best tracks in the region. The clubhouse was designed to be an extension of home – where you can feel comfortable and relaxed – not like you’re walking on eggshells. Far from a stuffy country club of old, GreatHorse would be welcoming and relaxed amidst the luxurious, world-class amenities provided.
From the very beginning, one thing has been abundantly clear: It’s Different at GreatHorse.
Gran Cavallo. Or, as we like to call it, GreatHorse, is the name of Leonardo Da Vinci’s magnificent horse sculpture commissioned back in 1482, and is the inspiration for a name befitting of our club. It also aligns perfectly with our passion for thoroughbred horse racing.
As one of the most sought-after horse breeders in the nation, the Antonacci family has been synonymous with racing greatness and integrity for over 50 years. Their involvement as owners and breeders of five Hambletonian Champions makes them well known on harness racing’s biggest stages. Not surprisingly, this heritage and passion is on full display throughout GreatHorse.
